Springmount Raceway revs up big plans for motorsport fans
After a huge 7000-strong crowd over the weekend, the Springmount Raceway near Mareeba is gearing up for even bigger and better things.
Organisers of the massive Nitro Car event held at the Springmount Raceway over the weekend are already planning bigger and better events for the newly opened facility.
A huge crowd of over 7000 people turned out for some fast, loud and exciting Nitro Car action at the new facility just outside Mareeba.
Nitro Express, Red Devil, Dark Horse, Stormtrooper, Bumble Bee were just a few of the powerful beasts which travelled from Sydney to shake up the raceway and light up the night with their nitro flames at the first ever night-time racing event held at the Raceway.
Despite the intense winds and some related technical issues which meant a shortened number of rounds were completed, the night was a spectacular showcase of drag racing.
The Nitro Funny Cars which are valued at over $250,000 each, can generate up to 4000 horsepower and were able to hit speeds of up to 400km/h on the quarter mile track.
The event was filmed by Fox Sports and 7 Mate and televised nationally.
Springmount Raceway Managing Director Evan Yelavich told TropicNow
"This event attracted people to the region from all over the state and country, and gained national media coverage.
"Springmount Raceway is committed to assisting the Cairns region’s push to become a hub for sports tourism. Such events also provide new quality entertainment options for the region.
"Springmount Raceway is a first class facility that is the best of its kind in Queensland after Willowbank Raceway just outside Brisbane. This means that we are positioned to attract national level racing events such as the 400 Thunder Professional Drag Racing Series which will be held here on October 1.”
Mr Yelavich said the organisers just needed to "keep upping the ante" to make Springmount events bigger and better each year.
"We also need to cater for the beginners of the sport at smaller 'test and tune' days and we will see our racer base grow as more and more people get into the sport now that we have the facilities up here,” he said.
“I think the potential for growth at Springmount Raceway is significant if we do things right."
