Community jumps on board fundraising effort to keep tropical artwork

Thousands of dollars have been raised to help Cairns Regional Gallery acquire a unique tropical artwork for its permanent collection, but more support is needed to complete the purchase.

More than $8000 has been raised towards the purchase of the stunning tropical artwork Goodenough Bay 1959, but more support is needed to complete to raise the $25,000 necessary to keep the artwork in Cairns.

The Cairns Regional Gallery Foundation is embarking on its innovative Jigsaw fundraising campaign, which works like a crowdfunding initiative and allows supporters to purchase a small virtual 'piece' of the painting by artist James Morrison.

The 2016 painting is Morrison's most recent work, and it was featured on the cover of Issue 2 of Tropic Magazine.

As part of the Gallery’s ongoing public art program, Morrison’s painting has also been brought to life as a vibrant wrap installation on the gallery's Shields St columns.

Gallery Foundation chair Lea Ovaska said all donations of $2 or more are fully tax deductible and can be made online - click here to visit the Gallery’s website.

“All donations, no matter how small or large, will help us reach our target by April next year,” Ms Ovaska told TropicNow.

“We are really asking the people of Cairns to support our campaign and help raise funds to purchase James Morrison’s wonderful painting.

"It is an important work by an established Australian artist and complements other works in the Gallery’s Permanent Collection."

The artwork is on display inside the Gallery. For more information about how you can support the Gallery Foundation’s fundraising campaign, contact [email protected]
