FATAL CRASH AT WUJAL WUJAL
A man has died and a female passenger is in a serious condition in Cairns Hospital after their vehicle crashed 16km south of Wujal Wujal yesterday.
The couple were travelling on Donovan Range at about 3.30pm yesterday when their car rolled and hit a tree after leaving the road. The male driver was pronounced deceased at the scene and the female passenger was transported to Wujal Wujal by a passing motorist and then airlifted to hospital. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
ALL EYES ON STATE BUDGET
City leaders are holding out hope that today's Queensland Budget will contain some goodies for the Tropical North. Funding to extend the Cairns Convention Centre and $120 million for a Smithfield bypass road are at the top of the local wishlist.
A $60 million commitment - the first payment of a $120 million pledge - will be included in the Budget to dredge Trinity Inlet. Treasurer Curtis Pitt hands down the fiscal accounts in parliament later today.
CBD CAR PARK CLOSES FOR REFURB
Council’s Lake St carpark is now closed for six months as part of a $5.9 million upgrade. The facility, which caters for around 300 cars, will get new security, lighting and CCTV features, a “rainforest inspired” facade and other upgrades.
Council is urging motorists to consider one of the CBD's private car parking stations such as Rusty's, the Convention Centre and above the Night Markets.
HEALTHY MESSAGE IN BASKETBALL SPONSORSHIP
Apunipima Cape York Health Council have signed on as naming rights sponsors of the Australian Indigenous All-Stars Men’s National Basketball Team to send a message of good health to far-flung communities.
Apunipima will work with the All-Stars to promote campaigns such as ‘Don’t Make Smoke’s Your Story’ and ‘Sugary Drinks Proper No Good – Drink More Water Youfla’ across Cape York.
