POLICE TARGETING LOCAL SUSPECTS IN BOMB INCIDENT
Police will investigate several people in the local community that they suspect of being behind the homemade bomb left on the side of the Bruce Highway at Edmonton yesterday.
The bomb was reported to police at 11.45am and buried and detonated seven hours later after an emergency situation was declared. The situation caused severe congestion until the highway was opened at 8pm.
Senior Sergeant James Coate told News Corp that it was “more than likely to be somebody who is trying to make something go bang for a bit of fun,” adding that making homemade bombs was a “dangerous and silly thing to do.”

AQUARIUM OPENING DATE POSTPONED
Cairns Aquarium has pushed back its opening date to July amid construction delays.
The aquarium is waiting on delivery of the last of its acrylic panels, a 10m high by 7m wide tank piece that will be part of its deep reef exhibit.
The massive panel will require a police escort through the city to the aquarium site.
Aquarium general manager Julie Cullen told News Corp that once the panel was in place, the three-floor building’s roof could be closed off and the internal fitout could be completed.
The aquarium had previously cited a mid-June opening date.

CAIRNS AGAIN LEADING THE WAY WITH VR TECHNOLOGY
Cairns is set to become home to Queensland’s first permanent virtual reality (VR) arcade.
The arcade, to be a part of Laserfun at Westcourt’s DFO, will feature a HTC Vive system and high-end MSI gaming computer, with VR goggles, handheld controllers and range of different virtual experiences, including those that are wheelchair accessible.
Cairns is becoming something of a VR hotspot of late: last month Allaro Homes won a major government grant for their nation-leading work with VR, with the company predicting virtual reality technology would grow into a $33 billion global industry by 2021.

FUTURE NOT SO BRIGHT AFTER ALLEGED SUNNIES THEFT
A Cairns North man has been charged following investigations into a number of thefts from Cairns CBD stores during April.
Police will allege the 30-year-old and associate entered an optical business at a McLeod Street shopping centre last month and each stole a number of pairs of sunglasses.
It will be further alleged that the man entered a CBD liquor store later that month, selected a bottle of spirits and left the store without paying.
He was charged with two counts of stealing and is expected to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court later this morning. His associate, a 48-year-old Earlville man, was previously charged on in relation to the alleged sunglasses theft.

ORIGIN OPENING IN DOUBT FOR JT
It’s looking increasingly unlikely that Johnathan Thurston will not be playing in the State of Origin opener on May 31.
Thurston hasn’t played for the Cowboys since Round Six thanks to a calf tear and a shoulder injury sustained in Australia's trans-Tasman Test win two weeks ago. Cowboys coach Paul Green has warned that JT was “one setback away from surgery”
Nevertheless, Queensland coach Kevin Walters is set to name JT to the side for Origin I on Monday. Maroons selector Darren Lockyer concurred, telling News Corp that “you have to give JT every opportunity to play.”
