Man killed in second Cairns hit and run in one night


Two hit and runs in the space of 12 hours in Cairns has left one man dead and several vehicles damaged.

The fatality occurred in James Street, Manunda just after midnight, when a 20 year-old male pedestrian was hit by a white ute.



He suffered a significant head injury and resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.

The driver of the car failed to stop at the scene.

Police say he or she drove off in an unknown direction.

They’re appealing for the driver or anyone else who witnessed the incident to contact them.

About eight hours earlier, at around 6pm, police were called to a three vehicle crash on Douglas Street in Manunda.

It’s alleged a stolen white 2012 Mazda BT-50 was seen driving erratically before crashing at speed into a parked Toyota Hilux, which flipped on its side before hitting a third vehicle, a Great Wall ute.

Both the Mazda and Toyota were extensively damaged and had to be towed.

No-one was injured.

The male driver of the Mazda fled on foot.

He’s described as a 16 to 18 year-old teenager of Torres Strait Islander appearance, about 175 centimetres tall with short, dark curly hair.

At the time, he was wearing a black t-shirt and black pants and was last seen running towards Cannon Street.
