Tropic Weekender: Your curated guide to the best events across the Cairns region this weekend

Kiss goodbye Christmas and welcome the weekend  – we have a stack of great events coming up.

There's lots of live music on, another Laneway FLOAT party, and the Taipans final pre-season match, as well as markets, races and boozy brunches.

The wet weather will continue over the weekend, with heavier falls expected on Saturday – but don't let that keep you at home. Cairns folk are experts in water-proofing all kinds of events.

Friday 8th January

It’s all live music and entertainment this Friday.

NightShift will be throwing down the best in reggae, funk and soul at Gilligan’s from 8:30pm, and one man roots dynamo Jackson Dunn will be at Elixir Music Bar from 9.30pm. Get there a bit earlier though to see the Silver Fox Jazz Band and their smooth, sassy tunes.

Saturday 9th January

Ladies and gents, it’s time to dress up and head out as the Cairns Jockey Club hosts a Summer Fun Race Day. From 12 to 6pm, watch six races and all the on-field fashion at Cannon Park Racecourse.

Laneway FLOAT is here – an afternoon of tropical cocktails, tapas and tunes by the Motel Nomad pool. Featuring a big lineup of local DJs, drink masters and artists in the venue’s gallery space, you won’t want to miss this one.

Enjoy the sound of summer this Saturday with the launch of Cinnamon Sun’s  If You Call tour at Bar 36. The show will be the first of Davy Simony’s new jazz chill-hop band, but get there early to see local support artists Jess Lynch and Jelly Oshen too.

Don’t miss out on the final NBL Cairns Taipans pre-season game! Playing at the Cairns Pop-Up Arena from 6 to 9pm, cheer on as the Taipans take on the Adelaide 36ers ahead of the 2021 schedule.

Sunday 10th January

Remember to drop into the local markets this weekend as both the Port Douglas and Atherton Indoor Markets will be open for your weekend stroll. Enjoy the sweet smells and sights of local produce, clothing, and accessories, as well as partake in fun arts and craft activities.

Sundays are brunch-days, and the boozier, the better. Crystalbrook’s Rocco is hosting a Bottomless Brunch – this weekend, with two sessions of a Moroccan-inspired three-course menu and endless mimosas.
