More mooring sites for Reef boaties
Boaties can use several new mooring sites across tropical north Queensland.
Ten public moorings are now available at four locations near Cairns, including Fitzroy Island, Sudbury Cay, Vlasoff Cay and Green Island.
The moorings, installed by a local contractor, are the first stage of a $2.4 million project that extends the public mooring and reef protection program along the Great Barrier Reef.
The project is part of the Queensland Government’s $180 million Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) is using project funds to build on the existing network of 123 public moorings and 144 reef protection markers (RPMs).
About 100 new public moorings and 150 RPMs are set to be installed at popular anchorage spots within the Whitsundays, Cairns, Capricorn Coast and Townsville regions.
Member for Barron River Craig Crawford says public mooring infrastructure helps provide safe and sustainable access to the Great Barrier Reef.
“This infrastructure reduces anchoring impacts on corals, improves boating safety and reduces visitor congestion,” Mr Crawford says.
