Shocked onlookers have described a loud bang and mass confusion after a ute crashed into a shop on Mulgrave Rd.
A clearly shaken Cairns local Jeffrey Rufino captured the immediate aftermath of the crash on his mobile phone.
Mr Rufino was in a meeting at first floor office on Mulgrave Rd when the crash occured just before 1pm.
Comment from Cairns Police:
"A man was charged after police were called to a traffic crash on Mulgrave Road, Bungalow on Friday 23 December where a ute crashed into a local business.
Police will allege the driver, a 17-year-old Westcourt man, drove the vehicle into the premises near Winkworth Street around 12noon and managed to free himself before fleeing the scene on foot.
The man was located and detained by witnesses to the alleged incident.
It will be further alleged the man drove the vehicle dangerously prior to the crash.
He was charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle whilst adversely affected, drink drive U.I.L, unlicenced driving, unregistered vehicle, uninsured vehicle, false plates, fail to give particulars at a crash and making unnecessary smoke.
He appeared in Cairns Magistrates Court on December 24 and was remanded in custody with his next court appearance scheduled for February 6.about the incident."
