No threat to TNQ as weather bureau predicts two potential cyclones

Weather Bureau has upgraded the likelihood of a cyclone forming in the Gulf Of Carpentaria and predicts a tropical low could form in the Coral Sea.

The Bureau of Meteorology says there's a 20 to 50 percent chance a cyclone will form in the Gulf Of Carpentaria this Thursday.

A massive monsoon trough spanning Northern Australia are responsible for fuelling the two lows, with more heavy rain expected in Gulf communities over the coming week.

A BOM spokesman told the ABC it was unclear whether the low in the Gulf had "enough time" to develop into a cyclone.

"There is definitely potential [to form], but into the weekend it is expected to drift further west and therefore it will decrease the threat, especially with the intensity," the spokesman said.

"Given the time of development and how much time it has to intensify I would say it would be a weak system."

BOM also says there's a 5 to 20 percent chance a low in the Coral Sea could also form into a cyclone, but it posed no threat to the Queensland coast at this stage.

If they do form, the cyclones would be called Alfred and Blanche respectively.
