Renowned North Queensland advocate Noeline Ikin passed away earlier today after a long battle with brain cancer.

Aged just 47, Ms Ikin was a tireless campaigner for communities in North Queensland, devoting her life to getting a fair go for people in remote and rural areas.

After spending years lobbying politicians for more funding and services in the bush, Noeline almost became one herself when she won the primary vote against Bob Katter in his long-held seat of Kennedy in 2013.

Mr Katter eventually won on preferences, but undeterred Noeline put her hand up to run against him again in the 2016 Federal election.

But a shock announcement in early 2016 that she was withdrawing as the LNP candidate for Kennedy revealed she had been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Despite the diagnosis, she continued to lobby politicians and advocate for the communities she loved, and was awarded the Etheridge Shire Citizen of the Year in 2016 for her life's work. 

At around 11.30am this morning, Noeline lost her brave battle with the disease.

LNP Far North Queensland coordinator and Noeline's long-time friend Dennis Quick today described her as "an icon of the bush and a strong lady who fought to the end".

Her family has said that funeral details will be announced on Tuesday.
