Police observed the vehicle travelling on the Kennedy Highway towards Cairns and attempted to stop the vehicle using tyre deflation devices, without success.

At about 7.40pm the car (pictured), left the Kennedy Highway and travelled down a steep embankment on the Kuranda Range.

The 20-year-old woman was located by police at the crash site whilst the male driver fled into bushland on foot.

Specialist police and a helicopter tracked the 24-year-old through bushland near Smithfield. He was taken into custody at about 9pm.

He is currently assisting police with their investigation. The woman has received medical treatment for her injuries.

LAST NIGHT... A man is in police custody after a tense three-hour search around the base of the Kuranda Range Road last night.

Officers from the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) captured the man involved in the alleged kidnapping of Port Douglas woman Jessica Hamill just before 9pm.

The capture ended a major police operation in the area, with crews sent in from across the region. Smithfield estate Canopy's Edge was in lock down during the incident, with no vehicles allowed to enter or exit and residents urged to stay indoors as police position themselves on a variety of streets in the area.

The man, aged in his 20s, allegedly fled the scene of a car crash on the Kuranda Range Road at around 6pm last night.

Ms Hamill was found by officers at the crash site and taken to Cairns Hospital.

Police urged residents not to approach the man, with local social media groups reporting helicopters searched the area with spotlights, while officers cordoned off the Kuranda Range Road and searched vehicles that were entering and exiting the area.

Police had feared for Ms Hamill's safety after she was believed to have been taken from her Limpet Avenue residence in Port Douglas sometime around midnight on Tuesday.
