Police believe reptile is responsible for death of Anne Cameron, 79
Human remains and personal effects have been found inside a 4.3 metre crocodile which was removed by officers from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection at Mowbray River near Craiglie last night.
The 4.3 metre saltwater crocodile was examined by a specialist in Cairns today with Acting Inspector Ed Lukin saying police were "confident" the reptile was responsible for the death of Anne Cameron, 79.
"We have notified the family and the Coroner," Insp Lukin said.
"The family have asked for their privacy to be respected."
Ms Cameron was reported missing after leaving her aged care home for a walk on October 10.
Police and SES searches found clothing and a walking stick with Ms Cameron's name on it, along with human remains during searches of creeks in the local area last week, with Insp Lukin praising the efforts of EHP officers, as well as volunteers during the operation to find Ms Cameron.
"The search was carried out in very difficult and trying circumstances and in a difficult environment during difficult conditions," he said.
"It was very emotional for all those members involved."
EHP Conservation Operations Manager Chris Artiemiew said the target croc, which was displaying "subtle" changes in behaviour was located on Sunday afternoon with rangers having to work through difficult conditions before it could be caught.
"It was a big job for our wildlife officers and they did an absolutely brilliant job," he said.
Police investigations are continuing with officers preparing a report for the Coroner.
