Travel website lists TNQ gem as one of Australia's best regional destinations

Congratulations Mission Beach, the secret is finally out!

Locals know its a great spot in TNQ but now the small, coastal town south of Cairns has attracted national attention after being named as the number two spot on the Experience Oz and NZ Australia's Top 10 Destinations for 2017.

The category encompasses the many hidden gems and smaller-scaled holiday hotspots around Australia, according to the company's website.

"Smaller in size yet no less big on character, Australia's regional destinations offer some of the most unique landscapes and charming experiences our country has to offer, without all the additional fanfare," the site said.

"If you're looking for a quality getaway, none of these destinations shall disappoint."

And who can argue with Mission Beach rating so highly on the list?

With a combination of beaches, rainforest, cassowaries, perfect weather and the laidback TNQ lifestyle there are plenty of things to love about Mission Beach and this is why it made the list.

"This Queensland gem located in the Cassowary Coast region is a tropical oasis and viable alternative away from the larger, more populated TNQ destinations," the website said.

"Mission Beach has a small resident population of about 4,000 - meaning you'll feel like a local as you lounge on the beach and stroll its gorgeous surrounds.

"Located between the more well-known Townsville and Cairns, Mission Beach serves as both a popular holiday destination for locals, as well as an up-and-coming one for interstate and international tourists.

"It's Mission Beach's lack of commercialisation that gives it its appeal, with a total of four beach villages providing visitors with that isolated, secluded and exclusive feel most yearn for in a tropical getaway."

Kununurra, WA (1), Apollo Bay, Vic (3), Albany, WA (4) and Experance, WA (5) rounded out the top five.

Bundaberg (6) and Gladstone (8) were the only other two sunshine state locations in the top 10.
