The incumbent Federal MP for the marginal seat of Leichhardt has received some high-profile support just a day out from the election, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison campaigning in Cairns.

Latest polling and betting agencies are showing Warren Entsch has just a slim edge over Labor’s Elida Faith.

Mr Morrison said the tight race is why he decided to fly to the far north following his visit to the Townsville seat of Herbert, where polls are putting the ALP and Coalition at 50/50.

“It says I take nothing for granted anywhere in the country and it says I love Entschy,” the Prime Minister said.

“I need Warren to be returned in order for me to continue on as Prime Minister.”

“This will be a very close election, whether it’s here in Leichhardt or where I was earlier today in Herbert.”

It’s the first time a sitting Prime Minister has visited Cairns so close to polling day since John Howard in the 2007 election, which the Coalition lost.

Scott Morrison used the occasion to sell his first homebuyers package – matched by Labor – in which a five per cent deposit could be used to purchase property without buyers having to purchase mortgage insurance.

He spoke to home buyers in the suburb of Mooroobool.

“Where we’re standing here today is in the heart of aspiration Australia where we’re seeing aspirations realised,” Mr Morrison said.

“We’re seeing Australians’ dreams of owning their first homes being realised, were’ seeing others who have that dream and they’re seeing it in sight.”

Meantime, Labor leader Bill Shorten has cancelled his trip to Brisbane for the last day of the campaign, following the death yesterday of Bob Hawke.

Instead, Mr Shorten is attending a memorial to the former Prime Minister at the Sydney Opera House.

Despite the interruption, political commentators say the timing of Mr Hawke’s death will favour Labor’s chances.
