Hunt on for more victims in Cairns bicycle punching rampage
Police believe a push bike-riding offender assaulted seven men in a 20 minute assault spree in the Cairns CBD last night, including two who had to be taken to hospital.
Plain Clothes Sen Const Mark Byrnes said so far four victims have come forward but there are possibly a further three.
“We’re not sure what his motivation is but these were all completely random attacks.
“Some of the victims were with their family, including young children so this will have some impact,” he said.
The first incident occurred outside a Lake Street restaurant, when a man perusing a menu with his family was punched on the back of the head by a teenage on a bicycle.
He allegedly rode off to the Lake Street bus stop where he hit a 48 year-old man so hard on the side of the head the victim had to be taken to hospital.
The next casualty, a 60 year-old who was standing outside Cairns Hospital, suffered a bleeding nose and facial cuts, while a 45 year-old two of his teeth knocked out as he walked with his family along the Esplanade near the Cairns RSL.
A 15 year-old boy was arrested by police a short time later and was transferred to the Cairns watch house, where he then allegedly assaulted a female officer.
Senior Constable Mark Byrnes said the extra possible victims were identified through CCTV vision.
“We are aware that he has assaulted other persons within the CBD area.
“We are asking for those people to come forward, including any witnesses who have seen this male riding on the push bike,” he said.
The Gordonvale youth has been remanded in custody.
So far, he’s charged with two counts each of assault occasioning bodily harm, common assault, assaulting police, obstructing police and possession of tainted property.
