'I WAS SMASHED MENTALLY'
Britain’s Jodie Swallow has spoken of the grueling effort required to take out this year's IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Cairns Regional Championship in slippery, muggy conditions.
Swallow joined Australia's Tim van Berkel to be crowned winners of the IRONMAN event, labelled the best Cairns event yet in its five-year history.
Swallow described the race as one of the toughest she had participated in after securing victory in 9:06.17hrs.
"I was really smashed mentally, I pulled it together in the last 10km I stuck in there, I really wanted it and I managed to hold Linsey off with the fast charge that she had but wow she really made me work hard," she said.
Victory was particularly sweet for van Berkel, who won in 8:15:02. His last IRONMAN win was back in 2008.
"It feels great to finally get a win and for it to be an Asia-Pacific Championship I am absolutely stoked," he said. "It feels awesome. I worked so hard for this race and to finally put all that work to use and come in with a win, I’m just soaking it in."
QUICKSILVER REEF SWIM - GREEN ISLAND

3KM EVENT
Cairns swimmer Jack McMenamin won the men's 3km event, while Caroline Stefan from Switzerland crossed the line first in the women's 3km event.
1.5KM EVENT
Guy Eli from Port Douglas won the men's 1.5km event, with Liz Stuart winning the women's 1.5km swim.
CORAL COAST TRIATHLON

Port Douglas turned on perfect weather for the Coral Coast Triathlon, with Kim Vernon of Perth taking out the Open category, while her partner Brody Baker won the men’s open category.
Both will be racing in June 12’s IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns.
1st female finisher: Kate Vernon of Perth
"Feeling pretty good. Had a bit of a rough lead up to this, so I’m really stoked to be back running and I can’t wait for next weekend. I’m doing the IRONMAN 70.3, and it’s Brody’s (her husband, who won the open but was second overall) first 70.3 and I’m so excited to watch him race out there.
"We came all the way from WA. We came over last year and loved it. Had such a great time, and we’re definitely coming back again."
While her partner Brody took out the men’s open category, the fastest men’s time of the day went to Marc Hardy of Richmond in Victoria, who was racing in the 25-29 age group.
1st male finisher: Marc Hardy of Melbourne
"I came up specifically to compete in the Coral Coast Sprint. I live in Melbourne, but originally from Tassie and have been up here for about a week. Staying at the hostel, been going out and having some fun. We had a big night last night carbo-loading.
"The weather is beautiful, the run on the beach, it’s awesome."

RRR MTB CHALLENGE

The RRR Mountain Bike Challenge is traditionally viewed as a warm-up to the Ironman Cairns, but competitors never seem to hold much back.
Cairns stay-at-home mum Anita Narula won the 35km leg, while her Sarah Kaehler took out the 70km version of the race.
Dominic Hoyle was crowned the 35km men’s champion, his third title in as many years, and Oliver Phillips took out the 70km.
