A Cairns night patrol group is calling for more volunteers to help it expand into new suburbs after a successful weekend of patrols in Edmonton and Bayview Heights.

Cairns Safe Knights is a new group of volunteers set up to "fill the gap between Neighbourhood Watch and the Police".

They stress the organisation is not a vigilante group, with members required to be over the age of 21 and pledge to "serve your community lawfully".

On Friday night, three members of the group patrolled the streets of Edmonton.

"It was great to be acknowledged by members of the public," the group said.

"Here's to many more patrols to make Cairns a safer environment for everyone."

Local residents are already expressing gratitude for the group's efforts, while Division 3 councillor Cathy Zeiger praised their work after an evening patrol in Woree.

"These guys have committed to giving their time to do regular foot patrols late at night in our suburbs and they also do community walks to raise awareness of crime prevention," she said.

"They are not a vigilante group, but working with Police to be extra eyes and ears in our community.

"To say I'm impressed with their attitude, professionalism and desire to encourage community members to be more aware and active in preventing crime is an understatement."

While the group's patrols are not publicised prior to them happening, the Cairns Safe Knights also conduct community walks in the early evening as a way for residents to meet and greet them.
