A-pizza-perfection: Tropic's guide to Cairns' best pizza

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better crowd-pleaser than pizza.

Whether it's all about that stretchy, stone baked dough and housemade Napoli sugo, or loaded with Aussie toppings (we need to please the pineapple-lovers too), pizza is pretty incredible. We love pizza.

And we particularly love the pizzas from the following Cairns joints. Here you'll find a list of the best places to grab a slice, including our pick on each menu – in case you're ever inclined to drop some takeaway into Tropic HQ.

Hopscotch

Our Favourite: Paddock

This aptly named Italian dish is a vibrant vegetarian option.

Made with mozzarella, roast capsicum, mushroom, zucchini, olives and ricotta, we love this fresh, wholesome combination. Hopscotch's hand-stretched bases and wood fired flavour are second to none.

For a traditional Italian experience we recommend an espresso after dinner and, if you still have an appetite for dessert, try their Ferrero pizza too.

GO THERE: 532 Mulgrave Rd, Earlville

Lush Pizza

Our Favourite: BBQ Meat Lovers

The aptly-named restaurant will not disappoint – these pizzas are about as ‘lush’ as they come.

The combination of salami, bacon, wood smoked ham, BBQ sauce, napolitana sauce and mozzarella atop freshly-made dough will have you drooling before you even order.

Lush Pizza prides itself on cooking exclusively with locally-sourced toppings, and vegans can also enjoy any pizza here by swapping mozz' for plant-based cheese.

There's also a neat side menu of nachos and wings, in case you needed further convincing.

GO THERE: 100 Sheridan St, Cairns City

La Pizza Trattoria

Our Favourite: Da Montania

Try walking straight past La Pizza and its alluring aroma of fresh flour and sizzling mozzarella. You'll want to stop, trust us.

Our favourite is the Da Montania, a vegetarian but flavour-forward combination of tomato, mozzarella, goats cheese, red onion jam and rocket.

These pizzas are bang on for value, service and location.

Locally owned and operated for over 25 years, La Pizza is a favourite for both tourists and the Cairns community. You can also try some local Blackbird coffee or icecream housemade with locally-sourced Mungalli Creek milk.

GO THERE: 93 Esplanade, Cairns City

The Red Pepper

Our Favourite: House Special

Your tastebuds are in for a treat with this one!

The House Special at the Red Pepper is made up of a napoli base, bacon, onion, pepperoni, pineapple, capsicum, olives and cheese.

If you love loaded pizzas, or just looking for a quick and tasty dinner, this local gem is where you should go.

We're always satisfied with our pick from the Red Pepper’s extensive menu, with a huge range of combinations and prices.

GO THERE: Shop 9/193 Swallow St, Mooroobool

Alessandro’s Pizzeria Antipasto Bar

Our Favourite: Prosciutto and Funghi

For those in fierce cultural opposition to pineapple on pizza, welcome to Alessandro’s! This is Italian dining at its best, with San Marzano D.O.P. tomatoes to boot.

Our pick is the prosciutto and funghi pizza, with flavoursome fior di latte, fresh basil, leg ham, and one of the most magical pizza ingredients – mushrooms.

With sweeping views of Lake Placid and regular jazz live music, you won’t want to leave this cozy establishment.

Known for its friendly staff and generous servings, the atmosphere here is divine.

GO THERE: 102 Lake Placid Rd, Caravonica

Rattle n Hum

Our Favourite: Zeus Deluxe

It’s worth a visit to Rattle n Hum for their tasty wood fired pizzas, and you can't go wrong their Zeus Delux.

This Mediterranean fusion features a delicious combination of napoli sauce, marinated lamb, mushrooms, feta cheese, red onion, spinach, mozzarella and tzatziki.

Gluten free options are also available.

Whether you’re more inclined to kick back and watch a game of footy (go Queensland!), or enjoy the tranquility of the back area, you’ll enjoy every moment at Rattle n Hum.

GO THERE: 67 Esplanade, Cairns City

Ollie’s Italian

Our Favourite: Rucola e Crudo

After careful consideration, we've concluded that the Rucola e Crudo at Ollie’s is Italian cuisine at its finest.

Tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto, rocket, shaved parmesan, tomato and a garnish of basil comes together to make quite a delicacy.

A candlelit dinner, a waterfront location, a gourmet dish and the polite tip of a chef’s hat – Ollie’s Italian is classy, creative, culinary excellence.

Their pizza is a taste of the high life.

GO THERE: 1 Marlin Parade, Cairns City

Vitalia’s Italian Restaurant

Our Favourite: Bufalina D.O.C

Soak in the glamorous view of the Cairns Marina as you melt over this deliciously decadent pizza.

The combination of San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte, fresh buffalo mozzarella, prosciutto crudo, tomatoes, basil and extra virgin olive oil sounds perfect, doesn't it? It is, trust us.

Owned and staffed by true Italians, the pizzas from Vitalia’s are something extra special.

GO THERE: Shop/G9 Pier Point Rd, Cairns City

Houdini’s

Our Favourite: Pesto Seafood Special

Definitely the most adventurous on this list, the pesto seafood special is loaded with local seafood (usually mackerel, scallops and prawns), onions, mozzarella, fresh basil and pesto sauce.

We would advise you share this stroke of pizza genius with friends – or eat it solo if you like a challenge!

There's a huge selection of traditional pizzas on Houdini’s menu, available for takeaway, delivery or eat in.

GO THERE: 2/375 Sheridan St, Cairns North
