The Cairns Amateurs Carnival Ball is shaping up to be the party of the year, with final release tickets nearly sold out.

Set to take place on the Cairns Esplanade lawns on Friday, 10 September, the ball promises plenty of glitz and glamour, entertainment, cocktails and food provided by Ochre Restaurant.

The black tie event, inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge!, is just one of many in the annual racing carnival this year.

Others include a high tea and cocktail party on the Thursday prior, as well as many different entertainment options to enjoy across the two-day races at Cannon Park.

President of Cairns Amateurs Carnival David Goodman said there is a strong demand for ball tickets, predicting they’ll sell out by the end of August.

“For local people, the ball is an opportunity to dress up and indulge in good old-fashioned escapism after what has been a tumultuous time,” Mr Goodman said.

“Over the past few years, we have worked hard to really lift the bar in terms of production value and enjoyment.

“While we welcome the next generation of Amateurs ball-goers, we are also mindful of retaining our long-time guests whose loyalty dates back to the enormously popular Tobruk pool days.”

The night’s entertainment includes musical style theatrics, high-energy dance performances, fire dancing and fireworks, along with a fundraising auction for the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation.

Full refunds are guaranteed on all functions should the carnival be cancelled or if patrons are unable to attend due to a border closure.

Trackside trends

There’s no doubt the importance of fashion is on par with the racing when it comes to the Amateurs.

In the lead-up, Cairns Central is hosting a Fashions on the Field exhibition, curated by fashion stylist Amanda Macor.

Spanning over 15 years, the collection features winners of past Cairns Amateurs as well as Myer state and national Fashions on the Field competitions.

The display runs in the Centre Court until 12 September.
