Five teens charged after an alleged joyride in stolen car


Police have charged an 18-year-old man and four youths following an alleged car theft from a Cairns North home and 60km joyride around the Far North yesterday. 

The 18-year-old and a 12-year-old were granted bail and are scheduled to appear in court at a later date, while three youths were denied bail and will appear in Cairns Children’s Court today.



It will be alleged the 18-year-old Brinsmead man forced entry to home in the Lakes Resort, Cairns North, during the early hours of Thursday morning before stealing vehicle keys to a white Toyota utility from the same address.

Police do not believe the juveniles later charged were with the man during his alleged break-in at the Greenslopes Street home.  

A couple of hours later the victim used a GPS tracker to monitor the vehicle’s movements and provided this information to police.

Police say the 18-year-old drove the vehicle to Mareeba and Atherton before driving down the Gillies Highway at Gordonvale. 

At his point police successfully deployed a tyre deflation device and the car’s four other occupants attempted to flee on foot. 

With the assistance of the Cairns Dog Squad, the 18-year-old man was arrested and later charged with one count each of burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, driving without a driver’s licence and wilful damage. He was granted bail and is scheduled to appear at Cairns Magistrates Court on February 19.

Four youths, aged between 12 and 16, alleged to have also been in the vehicle were also arrested and charged.

A 16-year-old Cairns boy was charged with one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle. His bail was refused and he's scheduled to appear at Cairns Children’s Court today.

A 12-year-old Cairns boy was charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and obstruct police. He was granted bailed and is scheduled to appear at Cairns Children’s Court on February 12.

A 14-year-old Manunda boy was charged with 12 offences including unrelated matters. The offences include four counts of wilful damage, two counts each of enter a premise and commit indictable offence and enter a premise with intent, and one count each of burglary, obstruct police, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and receiving tainted property. His bail was refused and the boy’s scheduled to appear at Atherton Children’s Court today.

A 14-year-old Cairns boy was charged with eight offences including unrelated matters. The offences include two counts of wilful damage and one count each of attempting to enter a premises, burglary, entering a premise and committing an indictable offence, entering a premise with intent, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of suspected stolen property. His bail was refused and he’s scheduled to appear at Atherton Children’s Court today.
