A 22-year-old man is appearing in the Cairns Magistrates Court today charged with making repeated hoax calls to emergency services.

Police say the Manoora man made several triple-zero calls in the early hours of yesterday morning, claiming there was a unit fire.

It’s alleged his manner was abusive and harassing.

Two Queensland Fire and Emergency Services units were deployed, but there was no fire.

Superintendent Rhys Newton said alleged hoax calls consume considerable resources and put other members of the community at risk in the event of a real emergency.

“Our Police Communication Centres across the state take more than 726,000 calls each year,” he said.

“These services save lives and it’s important they are used in emergency situations only.”

The man was charged with 11 counts of improper use of the emergency call service and spent the night in custody ahead of today’s court appearance.
