Police have arrested two men, one in Cairns and the other in Mareeba, both alleged to have brandished machetes in attempt to cause fear.

In the early hours of this morning, Mareeba police intercepted a 23-year-old man accused to have been threatening occupants of a vehicle on Byrnes Street.

After allegedly threatening the passengers with a 40-centimetre-long machete, the man walked away and police were notified.

“The man continued to walk along Byrnes Street and approached the same vehicle and threatened the occupants a second time,” a police spokesperson said.

“Upon police arrival, the machete was seized, and the 23-year-old man was arrested and later charged [with going armed as to cause fear].”

His bail was opposed.

The man is scheduled to appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court today.

On Monday afternoon, Cairns officers received reports that a man was carrying a large knife while riding a bicycle in Bungalow.

A 50-year-old Bungalow man arrived at his home and allegedly discovered the man in his backyard with machete.

After contacting police, the resident opened the gate and waited for officers to arrive.

It’s further alleged the cyclist rode towards the 50-year-old man while armed with the machete.

Police arrived and arrested the 33-year-old man.

He was taken to the Cairns Watchhouse and charged with one count each of going armed as to cause fear and obstruct police.

He is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on 18 November.
