Virgin Australia will soon launch a new direct service between Cairns and the Gold Coast, set to travel daily from 9 December.

A fare special between the two destinations has also dropped.

$79 one-way flights are currently on sale, for travel between 9 and 21 December, and 11 January to 6 April next year.

The sale ends at midnight, this Friday 15 October, or until sold out prior.

The new service joins Virgin’s Cairns network to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Virgin is also set to launch daily Cairns to Adelaide flights at the beginning of November.

Cairns Airport Chief Executive Officer Richard Barker said the increase in services is a welcome announcement for the local tourism and aviation industries.

“That’s great testament to their commitment to serve Tropical North Queensland and rebuild after the past eighteen months.”

Virgin’s new Cairns-Gold Coast service has the capacity to transport almost 10,000 seats each month.

It joins Jetstar’s daily service between the two Queensland destinations.

“Over a hundred and twenty thousand passengers fly between the Gold Coast and Cairns per year,” Mr Barker said.

“As Australia’s two most sought-after holiday destinations, it’s another opportunity for people to enjoy holidays with everything from the surf of the Gold Coast to the reef and rainforest of Tropical North Queensland.

“Subject to border restrictions easing soon, Virgin Australia will operate 53 percent more seats to and from Cairns in December this year versus December 2019.

“That’s a great vote of confidence in Cairns and our region.”
