Puppets string audiences along for satirical look at adult themes
Cairns Choral Society is used to treading the boards and its current season is treading a fine and satirical line as it brings a "South Park meets Sesame Street" style show to the stage.
Tony Award winning musical Avenue Q is brought to life by puppet and human performers portraying some of the real-life struggles that young people can experience as they enter adulthood.
And just so audiences are prepared, as well as the 'boy meets girl' them, the 'F' word will be heard throughout the performance and the show also features adult themes and a porn obsessed blue and orange monster.
This is the first time the society has attempted such a contemporary show with everything coming together under the watchful eye of experienced director Michael Lee Porter, who has been helping the local cast hone skills and assures audiences the adult themes are all part of the storyline and not just for shock value.
"This show isn't simply about learning lines and lyrics," he said.
"The performers also have to lip sync with their puppets, make them ‘breathe’ and sometimes, operate puppets whilst someone else is providing the voice.
"It’s not easy but the overall effect is spectacular."
