Unavoidable delay postpones aquarium opening until 19 September

Good things take time to happen, and so it is with the opening of the multi-million dollar Cairns Aquarium.

While most of the animals are now in their new homes and the finishing touches are being put on the inside and outside of the building, the official opening has been pushed back until 19 September.

The unavoidable delay is to allow for water systems to become fully operational with aquarium general manager Julie Cullen saying the difficult decision had to be made in the best interests of the animals.

"Like every other closed system aquarium we've always been at the mercy of the water chemistryand the marine tanks are not as maturing as quickly as hoped for," she said.

"This means we can't yet introduce the animals that we know you want to see - the sharks and large marine animals cruising through the Oceanarium so we've made the difficult decision to open a week later than planned.

"The extra week will allow the water to mature and allow us to source even more animals and make the Oceanarium even more spectacular for when we do open the doors to the public."

Ticket holders and people who have bought annual passes have been contacted by email to advise of details of the new pre-opening event.
