One of the Far North’s most treasured food producers, Mungalli Creek Dairy, is opening an ice creamery and milk bar in Cairns.
‘The Dairy’ opens its doors in a week’s time, with its official opening on 9 October to be celebrated with two-for-one ice cream and live music.
Located on 1 Shields Street, adjacent to McDonalds, the store will be open from 6am to 10pm daily.
Manager Beth Watson told Tropic Now it’s targeted not only to locals who know and love the brand, but new visitors to the region.

“We have the café up on the hill [in Mungalli] but it will be great to have a presence here in Cairns,” she said.

“We’ll have 18 ice cream flavours on offer too, including a lot of new ones.
“One is called Daintree Forest, which is chocolate with a Davidson Plum swirl.
“Some others are wattleseed with coffee and fior di latte, which really lets the taste of our milk shine through.”
Brothers Robert and Danny Watson took over the family farm in Mungalli more than three decades ago, shifting to organic and eventually biodynamic practices.
Today Mungalli Creek produces milk, cream, yoghurt, cheese and ice cream, all made with milk sourced from the family’s own property and two other Tablelands farms.
In 2019, the company launched an equity crowdfunding campaign to expand into ice cream production, successfully raising over $770,000.
Ms Watson said The Dairy will help give back to the community by sourcing local produce and coffee.
“We’re sourcing our breads and pastries from The Country Crumb in Atherton, and fresh produce from Rusty’s – buying spray-free and organic as much as possible,” she said.
“The menu is super simple and designed to showcase Mungalli Creek’s range.
“We’ll have open cheese melts, toasties, croissants and smoothies.
“Our coffee is Social Coffee from Providore Amore, which will soon be roasted locally too.”
The Dairy will also sell its lactose and gluten free range of ice cream in punnets to take home, as well as by the scoop.
