Book in for bargains too good to be left on the shelf

If that one gap on the bookshelf in the middle of your true crime novel series is driving you crazy, then the Fred Moule Pavilion at Cairns Showground is the place to be from tomorrow for the always popular Cairns Libraries Book Sale.

Starting tomorrow and continuing across the weekend, the annual event attracts thousands of readers hunting for a bargain among the more than 11,000 novels, reference books, children's books, DVD and CDs.

The sale, now in its 14th year, consists of excess library stock, which will make way for new titles and products. <strike></strike>

Cairns Regional Council's Sport and Community Services Committee chairwoman Cathy Zeiger said about 3,000 people were expected to sift through the stacks of titles looking for a "hidden gem" during the three days.

“The people of Cairns love to read, with two-thirds of our residents owning a library card,” Cr Zeiger said.

“The book sale is a chance to fuel this passion with everything from best-sellers to niche, non-fiction topics up for grabs for as little as $1.

"I encourage anyone looking for a bargain to get in early."

This year’s event includes a fun and interactive storytime between 9am and 1pm on Saturday as well as the chance to win a family pass to The Diary of a Wombat performance at the Tanks.

All funds raised through the sale will be used to purchase new items across the eight Cairns Libraries branches.

The doors are open from 9am to 5pm each day and more information on the sale is available here.
