They don't make all-dancing, all-tambourine-shaking, dreadlocked old hippies like him anymore.

In a great loss to the local music scene, Pierre 'Cairns Tambourine Man' Hayen passed away last week at the ripe old age of 84.

Pierre was a Cairns institution in the same realm as blues guitarist Ian 'Johno' Johnson and Michael 'Tarzan' Fomenko.

Originally from the Netherlands, Pierre spent much of his adult life on the Atherton Tablelands before becoming a regular sight at music events in Cairns.

He was a favourite photo subject of bemused tourists, and his carefree, blissed out dancing at local concerts was beloved by local musos.

Mitch Sullivan from Cairns band The Taste has fond memories of Pierre dancing at many of their gigs.

"Whenever we played at the Esplanade he was always there and always full of life," Mitch told TropicNow.

"His tambourines brought much happiness to everyone around him, and his love for music was easy to see.

"He will be greatly missed and it won't be the same performing on the Esplanade without him".

Pierre's funeral service is being held graveside at the Watsonville Cemetery, Petford Road, Watsonville on 2 September, commencing at 1.30pm.
