George to serve up Greek street food at Meet Eat Repeat

Legendary local restaurateur George Karagiannis has joined the line-up of food vendors at our Meet Eat Repeat pop-up event.

Few people in Cairns cook Greek food with as much passion and experience as George Karagiannis.

The legendary former owner of Fettas Greek Taverna has just been confirmed in the line-up of street food vendors at Meet Eat Repeat.

George has decided to serve up his famous lamb souvlaki pockets at the event.

And we can't wait to try them while kicking back on the green at West Cairns Bowls Club this Saturday.

Meet Eat Repeat will be held from 3pm-7pm on Saturday, 5 November - the perfect afternoon spot for a quick bite and cheap beer before the Cairns Taipans game tips off later that evening.

George said street food - more commonly known in Greece as mezze - was hugely popular in his native country.

Following his long stint at Fettas, George recently opened the Mykonos Caffeteria at the Il Palazzo building on Abbott St.

"This type of food is very authentic and very easy to eat, it's the most popular style of food in Greece and very popular at our cafe," George told TropicNow.

"I'm so excited about taking part in Meet Eat Repeat because I get cook to my favourite lamb souvlaki pockets. We use rump from the Tablelands that I buy from the same butcher at Mareeba I've been using for over 10 years.

"The meat is so soft and has the best taste. Our pita breads are delicious as well. It's going to be a fun afternoon at the bowls club!"

Other highlights at the event include:

  • tasty street-food style treats from Caffiend, Chef Wolfgang's smoked BBQ bistro, Sipping Duck, gluten free and vegan treats from cook Graham Harris at Bake Free and more
  • live acoustic tunes by emerging local singer-songwriter Jk
  • bowls club prices for beverages
  • fun lawn games and other surprises

Meet Eat Repeat was first devised at a think tank held by yRepublic last year, with a vision to support entrepreneurship, neighbourhood-activation and connecting like minded millennials.

TropicNow has a similar vision for our editorial content both online and in print, so in the spirit of collaboration the two organisations recently partnered up to deliver the event.

We'll see you there from 3pm on Saturday, November 5!
