Will Smith gets up and close with fishy cast of the Great Barrier Reef

Tourism advertising for the Great Barrier Reef doesn't get much better than this.

Hollywood superstar Will Smith is currently relaxing on Lizard Island, and he's letting his millions of social media followers know all about it.

The Men In Black star, who is currently promoting his Netflix movie Bright down under, is with his family on the luxury island, located about 240 km north of Cairns.

Posting to his 75 million Facebook followers and 5.6 million Instagram fans this morning, Smith wrote:

"Another one checked off of my Bucket List... Scuba Diving at the Great Barrier Reef! That fish was a whole lot scarier in-person."

The Facebook post has so far garnered over 42,000 likes and 412 shares, while the Instagram post has received over 388,000 likes.

Smith's trip to the waters of the Tropical North coincides with a visit to Cairns by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who announced $60 million for further protection of the Reef.

The package includes around $36 million to encourage farmers to reduce run-off pollution, and $10.4 million for more boats to target crown-of-thorns starfish. In addition, more field officers will be employed to provide early warning of further coral bleaching effects.
