Man airlifted to hospital after shark attack on North Queensland reef

A man in his 50s is in a critical condition after being bitten by a shark at a popular reef fishing spot east of Hinchinbrook Island.

At 12:22pm, the Queensland Ambulance Service and rescue helicopter responded to an emergency call about the incident near Britomart Reef.

The man was airlifted to Townsville Hospital and is being treated for the bite, believed to have been his upper leg.

Britomart Reef is a popular spearfishing and fishing destination.
