Tropic Weekender: Our curated guide to the best upcoming events around Cairns


It doesn’t look like anyone’s taking it easy this weekend ahead of Easter. 

The Taipans are back in town while the Barrier Reef Big Bash has its Grand Final, along with a few exciting food events and free live music on the Court House lawns.

There’s a moderate chance of showers over Friday and Saturday before the fair weather returns on Sunday.

Friday 26 March

Halpin Hurricanes and Twomey Schriber Thunder are fighting for a place in the Barrier Reef Big Bash Grand Final tonight. Batting off at Griffiths Park from 6.30pm.

Vivaldi’s is hosting another Let’s Get Pickled night, featuring all-you-can-eat tapas and a drink on arrival for a $39 ticket. Happy hour prices throughout the night with drinks from Flamingoes Tiki Bar downstairs.

Saturday 27 March

Yungaburra Markets make its monthly appearance this Saturday, 7:30am till midday. Head there for all your traditional market fares and wares. 

To celebrate the Archibald’s appearance in town, Cairns Central is hosting a series of free art classes for kids – and junk weaving is this week’s theme. 10am start for kids eight and under, and 11am for older kids. Book their spot here.

Laneway is joining forces with their compadres from the Courtyard to throw a Mexican Cantina this Saturday afternoon – complete with Latin dance classes, tacos, tequila, and a pinata. Tickets are $20 and include a margarita or sangria on arrival.

Griffiths Park will host the Barrier Reef Big Bash Grand Final tonight! Piccones Badgers are up against Friday’s prelim winners, playing from 7pm. 

Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Kaweyova are teaming up to present a remarkable evening of free live music on the Court House lawns. No tickets are needed for this free event, but head in early as capacity is at 300 people. 7pm start.

Sunday 28 March

Nu Nu’s hosting its Feast of the Beast this Sunday afternoon, celebrating an entire dressed steer from heart to hoof, paired with a selection of wines and cheeses. From 1pm, tickets are essential. 

The Taipans are back in town to face the Adelaide 36ers. Get to the Pop-Up Arena and support the Snakes from 4pm.
