Tropic Weekender: Our curated guide to the best upcoming events around Cairns

This weekend's all about live theatre, art and the Mardi Gras, as well as some spicy eats and beats up at Palm Cove.

Vintage thread seekers may also want to drop into the Showgrounds for the biannual Your Wardrobe Cairns

The forecast is looking fantastic this weekend – slightly cooler temperatures and a little chance of a few showers.

Friday 5 March

Those with a free hour this Friday might like to visit the three exhibitions currently on display at the new Court House Gallery. UMI Arts' Lore to Law conveys a First Nation’s perspective and some untold stories of the Court House, while Justicia by Bonemap explores social and cultural histories throughout the building's transition. Yarrabah Arts Centre's From the Ground Up celebrates the vitality and beauty of Yarrabah’s environment. Visit between 10am and 4pm.

To Kill A Cassowary is relaunching tonight at Bulmba-ja Arts Centre. A full set of shows will run until next Saturday, but tonight’s opener will be the first glimpse of the much-anticipated local production (and includes a glass of champagne on arrival).

Saturday 6 March

Saturday morning markets can be found at Gordonvale this weekend, with a huge variety of plants, food and gifts to browse through from 7am till midday.

The bi-annual Your Wardrobe Cairns is back on again at the Showgrounds this Saturday. From 9am to 1pm, the Fred Moule Pavilion will become home to an eclectic collection of second-hand clothes, shoes and accessories. Cash-only event, with a gold-coin donation on entry.

It’s Mardi Gras! Crystalbrook Collection is throwing a Fabulous Pool Party at Riley, with DJ Jamie Porteous playing beats throughout the afternoon. $20 tickets include a drink on arrival.

The festivities continue over at Flynn, where the official Parade viewing runs from 4pm till late. Live entertainment, gourmet food and fabulous cocktails galore. Free event, but RSVPs are required.

The Taipans are set to play the Adelaide 36ers tonight. The match is being screened for the Orange Army at the Casino Sport Arena from 4.30pm.

Sunday 7 March

Take a drive out to the Tablelands for the Tolga Markets this Sunday, on from 7am till noon.

Nu Nu’s hosting another Eats and Beats, and this weekend’s theme is Bombay Nights. With an Indian-inspired menu and entertainment by Electric Dreams, this one isn’t to be missed.
