UPDATE:

A 47 year-old man has now been charged with murder.

EARLIER:

The partner of a woman found dead in Cairns early this morning is being questioned by police.

Paramedics were called to an unoccupied unit in Eureka Street, Manunda, just after 5am where they found the 47-year-old woman unconscious in the driveway.

She was pronounced dead soon after, and police are treating her death as suspicious.

A 47-year-old man who police say had called paramedics, was also at the scene.

"That person is now assisting with our investigation," said Det Insp Kevin Goan.

"There had been an intimate relationship between the two."

Any charges are yet to be laid.

Police wouldn't comment on the nature of the woman's injuries, except to say they were unsurvivable.

Three crime scenes have been established by police, including one near the service station on the corner of Aumuller and Gatton Streets, the Eureka Street unit and an area near Eureka and Fallon streets where items of clothing have been found.

We would like anyone with any dashcam footage travelling in that area at that time to come forward," Det Insp Goan said.

"Similarly, we would like anyone who was in proximity to the (former) Caltex service station throughout last night and into the early hours of this morning that may have seen a group of First Nations persons gathered at the intersection there, we would like to speak to them also."

Anyone reluctant to come forward can call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.

Police say the man they are questioning and the woman who died were rough sleepers who have lived in the Cairns area for some time.
