A Cairns city intersection is the worst in the state for serious crashes, according to data from the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
The RACQ has released the figures, which show there were nine major crashes at the Mulgrave Road/Florence Street intersection over a three year period between 2018 and 2021.
There were also 18 serious casualties.
RACQ’s Head of Public Policy, Susan Furze, is calling for urgent action to help prevent any more major incidents.

“A common issue with many of these intersections, such as Florence Street and Mulgrave Road, is they are tricky to safely navigate and are often heavily congested, which can prove to be a dangerous combination for drivers,” she said.
“We want all levels of government to prioritise these intersections for safety upgrades.
“We know investing in infrastructure projects helps reduce congestion and, importantly, improves safety for all drivers in Queensland.”
The intersection is already on the cards for an upgrade as part of the Cairns Ring Road project, which will take in a section of Sheridan Street from the corner of Comport and Draper Streets to the intersection of the Captain Cook and Kennedy Highways.
The master plan is scheduled for completion later this year.
Intersections in Caboolture, Moreton Bay, Rockhampton, and Toowoomba were also identified as being among the worst.
