Local school leavers now have an opportunity to chase top-level footy while undertaking tertiary education, through a new two-year program unique to Cairns.

Launched today between TAFE Queensland and the AFL's Gold Coast Suns, the regional graduate program will see aspiring pro footballers train alongside professional coaches and players, while studying a qualification of their choice.

TAFE Queensland Project Manager Jesse O’Hara said the initiative will provide regional AFL players with opportunities that are usually exclusive to big cities.

“The SUNS have a strong junior development program that’s well-known across Australia for providing young athletes with a pathway to the elite level,” he said.

“It’s exciting to be able to build on that initiative in Cairns to include one of TAFE Queensland’s nationally-recognised qualifications, as well as nutrition, psychology and sports science studies.

“Through the SUNS Regional Graduate Program, participants will also connect with professional coaches and sporting stars, and gain a Certificate II in Sports Coaching plus AFL coaching and umpire certificates.

Student athletes will have the opportunity to visit and train at the SUNS facility on the Gold Coast and watch a game as part of the graduate program.

With support from AFL Cairns, they will also develop their foot skills and endurance with tailored training sessions at Cazalys Stadium and gym.

AFL Cairns General Manager Craig Lees said the launch of the SUNS Regional Graduate Program was a huge win for local players.

“With a new gym and state-of-the-art facilities at Cazalys Stadium, the SUNS Regional Graduate program will provide unprecedented opportunities for young players to develop their game,” he said.

“After more than a decade of working in partnership with the SUNS, we’re delighted to support a new pathway for emerging players.

Mr Lees said three members of the TAFE Queensland Academy of Sport, based across Cairns and Townsville, progressed to higher AFL honours last year.

“Through the launch of the new SUNS Regional Graduate Program, we know that even more future stars will follow in their footsteps.”

Enrolments for the SUNS Regional Graduate Program close 14 February.
