A second COVID-19 death has been recorded in the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service area, following the announcement on Friday that an unvaccinated elderly patient had died.

Tropic Now has sought more details about both cases, including the age and vaccination status of the most recent death, and whether either were infected in aged care.

A spokesperson for CHHHS said the service is bound by patient confidentiality, however state figures indicate the person who most recently died is elderly.

“We extend our sympathies to the family and friends of those who have died from COVID-19 locally,” he said.

“We are unable to provide any further details of these deaths, due to patient confidentiality.

“These deaths, however, are a reminder that vaccination remains the best way to protect ourselves and our loved ones against the impacts of COVID-19, including serious illness or death from the virus.

“Current evidence shows that people who have received a COVID-19 vaccine have a much lower chance of developing more serious symptoms from COVID-19.

“This is compared to those who did not get the vaccine.”

Statewide, there have been a further 10,212 cases announced today, as well as 13 deaths - all patients aged at least 70.

Across Queensland, there are 878 people in hospital, 50 of them in ICU.

Regional case and hospitalisation numbers have not yet been updated today.

Yesterday, the CHHHS reported there were 77 patients in hospital including four in the Intensive Care Unit, while 1,533 people had tested positive over the previous 48 hours.
