A man is due to face court after allegedly blowing almost five times the limit on a Cairns North street yesterday evening.

Police pulled over the driver on McKenzie Street at 5.15pm on Sunday during a routine patrol.

Police allege the man blew a blood alcohol reading of 0.238.

It will also be alleged the blue 4WD he was driving was unregistered and carrying seven occupants.

The man’s licence was immediately suspended and he was charged with one count each of driving under the influence of liquor, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving an uninsured vehicle.

He was bailed to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on 20 July.

Earlier in the weekend, police were also called to a “violent” brawl outside a Lake Street nightclub.

At around 3am on Saturday morning it will be alleged several people started arguing before the altercation turned physical, with one man knocked unconscious.

Police arrested and charged eight people including six males and two females.

“A 19-year-old Thursday Island man was charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm,” a police spokesperson said.

“A 23-year-old Thursday Island man was charged with one count each of public nuisance and obstruct police.

“A 23-year-old Gordonvale woman was charged with one count each of public nuisance, obstruct police and wilful damage.”

Police also arrested a 23-year-old Westcourt man and a 22-year-old Edmonton man, who were charged with one count each of public nuisance and obstruct police.

A 19-year-old Gordonvale woman was charged with one count each of public nuisance and obstruct police, while two Edmonton men aged 19 and 26 were charged with public nuisance.

All were granted bail and are due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on 19 July.
