Cairns Hospital has today revealed it will soon be searching for someone to take up the health service’s top job.

Chief Executive Tina Chinery has put in her resignation after more than two years in the role.

In a message to staff, Ms Chinery said she will be returning to Western Australia to be closer to her family following the birth of her first grandchild.

She also cited her mother’s passing in March as another factor in her departure.

Tina Chinery relocated from WA in 2016 to join the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service.

In January 2020, just prior to COVID-19 hitting, she took on the role of chief executive.

Ms Chinery says she is most proud to have led the Health Service’s COVID-19 response.

“As a regional centre, we were one of the few areas that had local transmission early in the pandemic,” she said.

“We were the only regional area to have international quarantine hotels.

“Our adaptability to take on new ways of working, linking with health partners, and think innovatively to care for people across our widespread catchment area made a real difference.”

Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board Chair Clive Skarott said Tina’s leadership throughout the pandemic was outstanding.

“Tina’s leadership and compassion will be missed, but we understand her need to be near her family in Western Australia,” he said.

“The Board will continue to progress the substantial plans in place for local health services including our transition to becoming a university hospital.

“Tina has made a major contribution to health services in our region and we wish her well.”

Ms Chinery finishes on 30 June before taking some time with family.

The Board says it will begin its search for a replacement shortly.
