A Tasmanian man is facing a charge of murder in Cairns, following the alleged killing of a show worker in Mareeba almost three years ago.

25-year-old Kyam Keith Broadby was arrested on Tuesday in Tasmania on a Queensland arrest warrant.

Mareeba detectives travelled with the man from Tasmania to Cairns before he appeared in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

His charge relates to an incident on 10 July 2019 at a showgrounds on Mareeba Dimbulah Road.

Shortly before midnight, it's alleged an altercation broke out between Mr Broadby and a 35-year-old Ayr man.

The Ayr man was found unconscious and was airlifted to Townsville Hospital with critical injuries, where he passed away five days later.

Detectives initially charged Mr Broadby with grievous bodily harm, but this charge was subsequently upgraded to murder.

He has been remanded in custody and the matter was adjourned to 27 April.
