Hundreds of flights to Cairns have been discounted by $100 in a bid to boost tourism over the coming months.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) announced the campaign in conjunction with Webjet this morning, which applies for travel on various airlines before 20 November.

Direct flights from Melbourne and Sydney are as low as $53.40, while one-way tickets from Darwin are also under $100.

Discounts also apply to flights from Adelaide, Perth and Hobart.

Bookings must be made through Webjet in the next 20 days.

TTNQ chief executive Mark Olsen said the campaign is expected to attract an extra 50,000 booked nights over the next four months.

“The campaign may sell out earlier as we anticipate there will be strong demand,” he said.

“Tropical north Queensland has enjoyed a bumper school holiday period with very strong visitation in waves over the four weeks indicating that interstate visitors are returning after two years of low numbers.

“Airport passengers numbers reached more than 94,000 in the week starting June 27 when all eastern states were on school holidays

“[This eclipsed] the pre-pandemic level by almost 4000 passengers.

“They have been wowed by the maturity of the destination and its extraordinary array of world-class experiences.

“This is bringing a new wave of advocates for a Tropical North Queensland holiday who realise that a week is nowhere near enough time to explore [the region].

Flights between Cairns and New Zealand recommenced last week, while services to Tokyo and Osaka are due to return this month.

Singapore Airlines also relaunched travel between Cairns and Chnagi in March.

“We are still a long way from recouping the $1 billion international travel market for the destination,” Mr Olsen said.

“TTNQ will continue to aggressively chase domestic visitors to drive demand for accommodation and experiences across Tropical North Queensland.”
