For the first time in almost a decade Cairns will host a series of men’s one-day international (ODI) cricket matches.

Australia will take on New Zealand this spring at Cazalys Stadium for not one but three day-night games.

Set to play from 6-11 September, the series follows shortly after Australia hosts ODIs against Zimbabwe in Townsville in August.

Queensland Country Cricket Association President Kavin Maher said the matches could bring up to 18,000 spectators to Cazalys.

“Australia and New Zealand are virtually two of the top teams in the world at the moment,” he said.

“New Zealand is the number one test team but they were beaten in the final of the one-day world cup by England.

“The two sides haven’t been able to play the Chappell–Hadlee Trophy too with all the trouble around COVID.

“It’s also been some time since we had an international men’s one-day tournament, close on ten years.

“To have three of them as day-night matches is going to be a pretty attractive spectacle.

“It’s good for the city and good for the region, and good for local cricket as well.

“Young cricketers of today who watch their heroes on television will be able to go down to the ground and watch them play.”

The series is set to be the first international one day cricket in Cairns since Australia battled Bangladesh in a three-game series in 2003, also at Cazalys (formerly Bundaberg Rum Stadium).

To prepare for the ODI series, Cazalys Stadium will be closed from the beginning of August to September 11.

Several AFL Cairns games will be relocated, including the first two weeks of the finals.
