The Queensland Department of Environment and Science (DES) has been investigating a significant fish kill in the Mulgrave River near Gordonvale.

It’s understood dead fish were found floating in the river last week about four kilometres downstream of the town.

DES officers conducted site inspections and estimated hundreds of tilapia, barramundi, catfish, eels, and shrimp had died.

They carried out water quality tests on location and took water samples and tissue from the dead fish.

Those samples will be analysed by a laboratory.

A DES spokesperson says the cause of the fish kill is unknown at this stage.

The spokesperson said it could have been the result of low levels of dissolved oxygen in the water.

Those low levels can occur during periods of high water temperature and low river flows.

You can report fish kills to the DES on 1300 130 372.
