The desire for many Far North Queensland residents to enjoy the great outdoors does not equate to spending time looking after their lawns.

Fortunately, those who would rather be on the end of a fishing line than a weed sprayer can rely on Coochie HydroGreen’s tailored lawn services to keep their grass looking great.

First established in Canberra in 1987, Coochie HydroGreen has steadily expanded its service throughout Australia and is now available in FNQ with owner/operators Ben Challis (Cairns North) and Jarrod McCann (Cairns South) steadily cultivating a growing number of satisfied customers.

Jarrod said although FNQ lawns were distinctive from most other regions in which Coochie HydroGreen operates, their treatment remained fundamentally the same.

“FNQ has a large range of issues related to its tropical climate,” Jarrod said.

“Whether it be during the dry season when plants and soil are not getting the water required, or the wet season when the soil can be waterlogged or can leach nutrition and minerals.

“The wet and humid conditions in summer bring other challenges including diseases and pests, such as army worms that can decimate a lawn within days.”

Ben, who previously owned and operated a Coochie HydroGreen franchise in Melbourne, agreed the service was similar in FNQ, but added that the rapid growth rate of grass and weeds within the region had to be accommodated.

“Everything grows so rapidly here, it’s a hot house basically,” Ben said. “I thought the phrase ‘you can see the grass growing’ was rubbish until I moved here but now, I’m sure you can watch it grow!”

Coochie HydroGreen’s professional, non-toxic treatments are animal-safe, suitable for commercial and residential customers, and contain a mixture of liquid fertilisers, organic soil conditioners and soil moisture retainers.

Combined, these elements promote strong, healthy lawn growth and spot treat weeds, pests, and diseases to give lawns a lush, weed-free appearance all year round.

Customers receive six bi-monthly visits per year from their technician who will apply a seasonal mix of products to boost lawn nutrients and provide additional treatment and monitoring to help turf thrive throughout each season.

Ben said although he and Jarrod did all the technical work to help lawns look their best, customers had their part to play in achieving successful results.

“As long as the customer gets water on to the lawn when it needs it, and mows it regularly, then they will get a good result,” Ben said.

“It’s a partnership between us and the customer. Some customers think the service is magical, and it is as long as they do their part with the watering and mowing. We will do the rest.”

As magical as the end results may seem, Jarrod said lawn transformation occurred over time.
“Weed die-off and subtle changes can be witnessed within weeks but the overall health of the lawn is noticeable after two to three cycles of treatment,” Jarrod said.

Ben likened the Coochie HydroGreen service to the care greenkeepers and ground staff give to turf on golf courses and sports fields.

“We are bringing the same technology and tried, tested, and proven techniques for lawn care to commercial and residential properties, just on a smaller scale,” Ben said.

Coochie HydroGreen services are largely restricted to Cairns and surrounds at present, but Ben and Jarrod are eager to expand into other areas and encourage Tropic Now readers to get in touch to find out more about what a tailored lawn service could do for them.
