Bentley Park College has opened its Medical Training Precinct, a facility designed to encourage high school students toward careers in health care.

The $1.3 million project makes Bentley Park College Queensland’s first Gateway to Industry School Health, a project to inform students about health care roles and how to prepare for them.

Queensland Education Minister, Grace Grace, congratulated Bentley Park College on being first in the project.

“Bentley Park College is the first of around 30 schools in Queensland to become a Gateway to Industry School for Health.

“It’s great to see these facilities now in place to support its innovative education programs.

“It’s fantastic to see how the College is leveraging its status as a Gateway to Industry School for information and communication (ICT) technology as well, to deliver secondary health education of the future.”

Speaker of the Parliament and Member for Mulgrave, Curtis Pitt, said the Medical Training Precinct will open pathways to health training and employment across Far North Queensland.

“The College uses virtual and augmented reality and other technology to enable the students to practice all sorts of vital health skills in a very safe and practical way.

“That ranges from identifying health hazards, practising how to respond to and treat various health scenarios, right through to learning about human anatomy.

College Principal, Bruce Houghton, said it’s an exciting time for the school.

“Opening our new Medical Training Precinct is a game changer which opens up health training and employment options for young people right across Far North Queensland.

“By combining our expertise as a Gateway to Industry School in both health and ICT, we are delivering and developing truly innovative and futuristic health education programs.

“We are also doing this in a way that local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students find meaningful and engaging, and which also supports other Queensland schools, which is wonderful.”
