Reigning Red Bull Air Race world champion, Matt Hall, will fly an extreme aerobatics display over Cairns on Thursday afternoon.

Matt will by flying his MXS-R retired race plane, which has a top speed of 240 knots (440 kilometres per hour) and is an extremely manoeuvrable aircraft.

It can climb at 6000 feet a minute and roll at 420 degrees per second, allowing for a spectacular display of aerobatic manoeuvres.

The former RAAF fighter pilot has long been at the top of world championship air racing, with seven wins and 25 podiums.

He’s the most successful pilot in the modern era to compete in the Air Race Elite XR\1 category of events.

Matt is a third-generation pilot who made his first solo flight at 15 and got his wings at 18.

He can fly gliders, ultralights, hang gliders, powered aircraft, helicopters and military jets.

The aerobatics display over Cairns will start on Thursday between 4 and 5pm, with the exact start time subject to weather conditions and air traffic control requirements.

It’s part of the Regional Aviation Association of Australia (RAAA) Roadshow event at Double Tree Hilton on Thursday and Friday. Matt is a guest speaker on Friday.

The RAAA is a not-for-profit organisation representing regional aviation organisations across Australia.

Delegates will be briefed on the Federal Government’s proposed aviation white paper and on aviation recovery strategies.
