Fire crews have been called to a fire at a Cairns beach today, the latest in a series of blazes across the region since yesterday.

The grass fire broke out just before midday at Yorkeys Knob.

It was located right next to the beach on the intersection of Sims Esplanade and Wattle Street.

The fire was doused within an hour.

The emergency came as police ramped up their investigations into 12 fires that broke out on the Tablelands yesterday.

Acting Inspector Kyell Palmer said it’s believed all were deliberately lit.

“We will be looking to identify these offenders and put them before the court,” he said.

The most serious blazes were in the Chewko and Arriga areas, where police made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act and several properties were evacuated.

No-one was injured but the damage to structures in the area is still being assessed.

Fire crews were also called to Tinaroo Creek and further north, to Bibhoora.

They’re appealing to motorists who were in those areas since 1-PM yesterday to contact them, particularly if they have dash cams.

Residents with CCTV are also being asked to get in touch.
