Tropic Weekender: Our guide to the best events and things to do in Cairns

A long weekend calls for an abundance of activities, and this weekend delivers!

From Savannah in the Round, to Oktoberfest celebrations, comedy shorts at Flickerfest, and a bunch of live music events; there's plenty to get amongst.

Plus, this long weekend happens to be the last one until Christmas, so get your fill before the countdown begins.

Friday 30 September

It's finally time, with the long weekend comes the return of Savannah in the Round. Putting Mareeba on the map, the 4 day festival will host a range of international, Aussie, and local artists. They have day tickets available if you're curious to check it out.

The Royal Czech Ballet will visit Australia for the first time performing the legendary Swan Lake. Tickets can be purchased online, with one show daily through to Sunday.

Crankworx Cairns is bringing the Kidsworx Free Mini Shredders Pop-Up, two days of development aimed at 5-12 year olds looking to learn a range of mountain biking skills. No booking or registration required.

The Butterfly Effect, Australia’s biggest independent heavy band, kick off their national tour at The Tanks following the fresh release of their fourth album IV. Tickets are still available, but they're known for selling out!

Tropical Arts brings you The FNQATA One Act Play Festival. The event includes two nights of short one-act plays by performers from the region as well as a range of acting workshops. Events run all long weekend.

The Pub Rock exhibition opens at the Tablelands Regional Gallery and will run through to 12 November. It showcases the people, places, scenes and sounds defining the 1970s-80s music scene in Australia.

Saturday 1 October

Flickerfest is back for its final weekend with a clever off-kilter selection of funny shorts from across the world. Short Laughs Comedy is on at the Botanic Gardens, tickets can be purchased online.

Australian dance music trio Art vs Science is performing at The Tanks! The boys insist on playing everything live, so their shows have garnered a reputation for delivering unmissable shows and intricate dance ostinatos using only human hands, drums, guitar and keyboards.

October is pride month, to kick things off is the Turtle Cove PRIDE FESTIVAL 2022 Opening Party. The event is circus themed with a range of themed performances and entertainment.

Sunday 2 October

Oktoberfest is back at Hemingway's Cairns Wharf for another year. Doing their most to make the day a massive celebration, there'll be live music, games and prizes, and of course, dressing on theme is strongly encouraged. 

Palm Cove Markets and Tolga Markets are both on this weekend.

Hosting some of Australia’s and the world’s best emerging tennis players, Cairns Tennis International #1 begins today and runs through to 9 Oct.
