Five Queensland Ambulance Service crews attended the scene. A 14-year-old boy was taken to Cairns Hospital with critical head and leg injuries, and has since been flown to Townsville for further treatment.
A 13-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy were also taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries. Police said they will be arrested when they're discharged later today.
Detective Inspector Kevin Goan said he's thankful no other road users were injured.
"What is concerning to us is that we have an inexperienced driver traversing a notorious stretch of road in the Kuranda Range road," he said.
"We have an inexperienced young driver driving on a three-lane motorway at a time where other lawful road users are there.
"We are really thankful there has been no innocent third party injured as a result of this happening yesterday."
Inspector Goan said police were aware of the vehicle being reported stolen, but said police were not in pursuit at the time of the crash.
Investigations are continuing and police have appealed for witnesses or anyone who has video of the incident to contact them.
