James Cook University (JCU) is getting high school students ready today for tomorrow by offering tertiary courses to those in years 11 and 12.
The JCU NOW program offers subjects across health, education, business, law, science, technology and engineering.
One of the major benefits is that successful completion counts towards a student’s QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education).
Most of the courses are offered at both the Cairns and Townsville campuses, and online to cater for more remote students.

“The subjects we have offered are those we feel will be interesting to students, as well as being an opportunity for them to get a head start on their tertiary studies," she said.
“Subjects have also been aligned so they provide an extension opportunity for students alongside their high school subjects.”
The courses are offered to both state and non-state schools, to students in years 11 and 12.
That means current year 10 and 11 students can now take the opportunity to enrol this December.
10 places in each subject in each location are up for grabs.
To be eligible, a student must have a B average or higher and they’ll need the support of their school as well as their parents.
“Schools that I have spoken to have been really excited about this program from JCU and there are lots of conversations being had with Year 10 students about these opportunities during their Year 10 Senior Education and Training planning, going into Year 11,” Susan said.
“We’ve seen really steady growth this year and expect to keep growing, in the number of students enrolled as well as the number of subjects we offer.”
A student’s commitment is dependent on the subject selection, but generally, they’re asked to set aside two to three hours for lectures, tutorials and workshops each week, along with a few hours of study time to prepare, complete and submit assignments on time.
As well as counting towards their QCE, successful completion can earn credits for a student's chosen course, while fast-tracking a potential offer for a university place.
A special virtual open day is being held next week – September 13 - for students and their parents to learn more about JCU and student life.
There will be presentations on study options and virtual tours of campuses and facilities, while prospective students will have the opportunity to chat live to JCU advisors, current students, academics and alumni.
Head here to register for the open day and for more information about JCU NOW go to the JCU website.
